It was that time
That time for my date with a local coffee shop here in Koh Tao, Thailand...
As I walked out of my place, I stumble upon who I would find out is John and his two freakin cute dogs.
We start chatting about lizards, hikes and geckos and then John gets me back on track with my morning agenda..
He tells me about a cheap local spot, but I’m...
going to have to walk far for it.
I’ll do anything for a good cup of coffee.
As I’m walking I stumble upon a Spanish guy named Christian who’s in quite the conundrum.
He’s got two motorbikes on his hands, because he ran out of gas.
Now he’s stuck with getting them both back in town.
He sees me walking and asks if I’d be willing to help him out.
I tell him the reason I’m walking is because I don’t know how to drive a motorbike.
Christian says, “Well there’s no better time like now..”
Hmm... I pivot around doing my nervous should I, should I not dance.
F*^k it, why not?
Once again, challenge accepted.
We very slowly make our journey towards town and I’ll be damned...
I am driving a mother freakin motorbike!!
We thank each other for our shared morning victories and part ways because..
As I’m walking feeling pretty damn chipper and good about myself...
A local woman stops on her motorbike and asks if I’m going to 7/11?
7/11 is the mecca for all things, wipes, coffee, toilet paper and lunch.
Yes I said lunch.
I giggle and tell her I’m actually heading to a coffee shop.
She tells me to hop on her bike and that she’s taking me.
My heart warms at her generosity.
She drops me off at 7/11, not at said coffee shop to which I giggle again, because hell its 7/11, the spot everybody conjugates at.
Believe it or not, but I actually do get my coffee.
As I walk back to my hotel, I run into John again and he says “I see you got your coffee!”
I tell him, “Yes and I’ve had the quite the morning because of your coffee recommendation.”
I share with him how I learned how to drive a motorbike, helped a fellow man out and then had the same generosity returned to me from a local woman who told me to hop on her bike and off to 7/11 we went!”
John laughed and said “You were just supposed to go get coffee .”
I laugh back and say "yes exactly".
As I walked back to my room with said coffee in my hand, I laugh to myself and think...
“Arica this is it. This is the freedom you talk about, this is the fun of having random intimate encounters with strangers. This is the magic of life you keep sharing through your work.”
It’s sharing a moment of courage with a stranger, while helping that same stranger out of a dilemma.
It’s experiencing a moment of generosity with an absolute stranger, who doesn’t fully speak your language and you don’t speak theirs... but you share in a universal language..
It’s thanking a new friend for sharing his local gem of a coffee shop with you and then telling him how his simple gesture just created a magical, courageous and whimsical morning for you.
This is it.
This is freedom.
