When you think of desire what do you think of? Fast cars, passionate sex, chocolate, the buffet line at the local Chinese restaurant, shopping with an unlimited credit card? It’s true desire can be many things, but one thing that it is not is necessity. Meaning our desires are the things that are in abundance to our necessities. Sure if you can’t pay your light bill, I’m sure you’d desire for the means to pay it, but really? Does that bring excitement to your core? It surely brings excitement to the fact that your need is met, but then what?
I’ve watched people who have been beaten down my life and the hardships they’ve faced and the most important thing I notice every time is their lack of desire. Necessity and false comforts slowly creep in and fill the void of desire. But does it really? Facades of desire can never truly replace the authentic. When you look into the eyes of a person who has walked a mile with no desire to fuel them, you can see the hopelessness in their eyes. You can see a deadness.
Today I shared a quote on my Facebook that said, “Our desires are never to be shunned for they are our compass.” In your quest for love and in your relationships, your quest for more love is fueled by your desire. When you shut down that desire and allow it to grow dull due to the cares of the world, you have shut off your life supply to your heart.
It’s important to return to the things that awaken you. A simple moment at the beach can set the precedence for your heart to drink of the deep river of desire and set you on a path to receive more of the love you been in search for. Quality time with a friend to talk about the things that you have set on the shelf for far too long can be awakened in a moment! Your desire for your spouse, your partner can be set on fire just by stepping away from what is necessary on a given night and the two of you participating in an activity that solely revolves around what you want.
Do whatever you have to do to keep your desire alive, to keep it turned on. When you see that your life is outweighed by necessity over desire, bring the shift that creates the perfect balance and harmony. Don’t make excuses or focus on the storms that may seem to engulf you, but step away and reevaluate what’s in your heart. What desires are you ignoring? Which ones have you silenced for far too long? What are you keeping yourself from? Go after it! Embrace it! For desire is not just a luxury, but it is the wellspring, the oxygen for you to live a full life.
